A Study of Communicative Characteristics of Korean Children at One-word Stage: Comparison between Language Delayed Children and Normal Children in Facilitative Play Contexts

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the communicative characteristics of the languagedelayed children with those of the normal children matched on the expressive language level. The facilitative play techniques were used to elicit communicative intents from the children.There were two experimental conditions for facilitative plays: the active facilitative play and passive facilitative play. Thirty children, 15 language- delayed children and 15 normal children participated in the study. Each child was interacted with the examiner for 60 minutes and the procedure was video- taped. The following result s were obtained from the experiment . (1) The normal children in one-word stage showed two communicative acts per minute. (2) The language- delayed children revealed 1.26 communicative acts per minute. (3) There was a statistically significant difference between the frequency of communicative act of the normal group and that of the language- delayed group. (4) There was a statistically significant difference between the frequency of communicative act of the active facilitative play condition and that of passive facilitative play condition regardless of communicative normality. The one-word stage children used more communicative act s in a facilitative play condition than in the passive facilitative play condition.
